Building Clinical Expertise to Meet Women's Unique Treatment Needs


To provide Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) and Department of Defense (DoD) mental health providers with clinical knowledge and skills for gender-sensitive care to women veterans and service members, and to develop a community of practice.


This three-day mini-residency will include a blend of clinical demonstrations and role plays, didactic sessions, and small group, case-based, expert-facilitated discussions. Participants will develop strategies and action plans to disseminate best practices for gender-sensitive mental health care to providers and leadership at their local facilities.

Target Audience:

VA and DoD physicians, physician assistants, advanced practice nurses, psychologists, social workers and counselors providing mental health care to women veterans and service members.


At the conclusion of the mini-residency, participants will be able to:

  1. Acquire knowledge of gender differences, including biological, social, and cultural factors
  2. Create an action plan to implement at one, three, and six months following the mini-residency
  3. Advance gender-sensitive mental health services for service women through implementation of the action plan
